A FORMER MILL VILLAGE


Neilston was a former Mill Village (Photo to the right is Crofthead Mill as it is today)

The Village lies on the River Levern Southwest of Barrhead in East Renfrewshire

Neilston became the centre for bleaching cotton and calico printing in the 18th Century and continued printing and spinning cotton into the 20th Century.


Over 2,000 people worked at Crofthead Mill some ex employees are at this moment producing a book about 'days at the Mill' the group have a web page click here and read some history about working at a Mill

John Robertson who built the engine for the Steamship the Comet was born in Neilston in 1782


A replica of his Engine is in the Museum of Transport in London

There is a Monument in Kirkinstyle Lane Neilston dedicated to his achievement.
